MEET HEALTHY GRANOLA

OUR STORY

We, like others, found it tedious to enter our food information to track our nutrition in apps such as MyPlate & MyFitnessPal. We wanted something easier to access for the consumer and whom the information needs to be shared with, such as doctors and dietitians. That desire is what sparked the creation of Healthy Granola. When researching this idea, we came across Foodvisor. Foodvisor already exists however, it costs the consumer a monthly subscription. It also is not as accurate as our app. This is because our app scans the nutritional facts off of an item, which is more accurate than a camera that can have many variables to control like lighting, blurriness, focus, etc. Ours is free and helps the medical community as they directly get this information as well.

OUR VISION

We want to see this app thrive, helping those who want to monitor their diets, and doctors work with their patients to help change their diets due to any dietary concerns. They can teach people about this app. This would cause fewer problems for those doctors as well as make their lives easier when doing an examination. They will have the physical data because they can look at it through this app to help them make decisions about that person, as well as diagnose any problems. It also helps dieticians as someone suffering from diabetes can track what they are eating as well with this app.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

We wanted to create an app similar to myPlate but more simplistic and accessible. Instead of typing in each thing you ate that day, you just have to use your phone, scan the barcode, select the number of servings that you had of that item, and log it in your daily food planner. Our app is better than myPlate. It is quicker, and can be done on a mobile device which makes it more accessible to others, as well as would make more people want to track their calories.

How It Works

Our app was made using kivy which is a python framework for developing mobile apps. We then used visual studio code with the Kivy framework to make the basics of our mobile app. We then coded the basics of this app. We coded the app to work where when you press a button, it pulls up the person's webcam, and then you can press a button to take a photo. This is the basics of what is has so far, however this was done to demonstrate the ability to be able to make a barcode scanner.

The Future Of Granola

In the future, we plan on making the app fully functional. Adding the option for people to enter their information so that they can get the best dietary advice possible. Next, we will allow the option for a QR code scanner. This is so that the nutritional facts of each item of food could be taken. Then, a dropdown for the number of servings of that item had. Also, we see restaurant chains adopting our app and adding their food items to the database. Grocery stores would add barcodes for their customers to scan to their phones that register the food to their tracker. And for the food we can’t be scanned, the restaurants could add these items to the said database that can be selected from a dropdown menu. As long as the idea becomes big enough for restaurant chains, smaller restaurants can adopt this concept.
